What is a Medical Assistant?
Medical assistants, simply put, are becoming indispensable in the medical field. Because of the broad nature of their training, you can find them in every medical or clinical facility. They can work in both administrative and clinical capacity. Their primary responsibility is to keep the health care office running as smooth as possible. For example, they can do some or all of the following:

1. Schedule and cancel appointments for patients
2. Record patent’s vital signs
3. Clean, sterilize, and sanitize medical instruments, devices, and equipments
4. Take patients’ medical history
5. Explain treatment methods, medications, and doctor’s order to the patient
6. Collect laboratory samples or specimen from patients
7. Clean and treat wounds or injuries
8. Update and send patients’ and insurance bills
9. Update and order office and laboratory supplies
10. Etc.

The medical assisting career requires someone to be a team player. You will be working with a lot of different people in clinical and/or office settings.

How to Become a Medical Assistant:
Unlike some medical assistant careers where you can get on the job training, you will need the right training to succeed in the medical assisting profession. You have to be ready to do a lot of things that to wing it will not work.

To start, you will need a high school diploma or equivalent. You will then need to go to a school that offers medical assistant certificate or degree program. Such program will prepare you by teaching you things like:

a. Introduction to Laboratory Procedures
b. Medical Insurance and Billing
c. Medical Office Terminology
d. Clinical and Laboratory Skills
e. Introduction to Pharmacology
f. Patient Oral, Verbal, and Written Communication
g. Medical Office Procedures
h. Etc.

Medical Assisting Salary:
Medical assistants make $29,000 per year to start. Some make a starting salary of $38,000 per year. This depends on your location and level of responsibility. Of course, this salary will continue to increase as you gain more experience and years of service.
