What is a Biomedical Equipment Technician?
You see them all over the place in hospitals or other heath care facilities. They are devices or machines that diagnose or keep patients alive. What you most likely don’t see are the people behind the scene that keep them working. And who are these people you ask?

They are biomedical equipment technicians or medical equipment repairers as they are called sometimes. These technicians take care of medical equipments, devices, and instruments used to diagnose and treat patients. In a normal work day, the medical equipment repairer can perform some or all of the following:

1. Calibrate and test equipments, devices, and machines to make sure they are functioning properly

2. Install and test new equipments, devices, and machines

3. Inspect old equipments, devices, and machines

4. Disassemble malfunctioning equipments, devices, and machines to locate the problem

5. Repair malfunctioning equipments, devices, and machines after problem is located

6. Reassemble fixed equipments, devices, and machines

7. Orders parts that are needed to repair malfunctioning equipments, devices, and machines

8. Send out equipments, devices, and machines to manufacturers if they can’t be repaired in-house

9. Perform safety and security checks on equipments, devices, and machines

10. Educate healthcare personnel on proper use of equipments, devices, and machines

11. Keep inventory and record of parts and supplies

12. Keep and update maintenance records for equipments, devices, and machines

13. Etc.

This is the mechanical or technical part of medical assisting. You must be interested and have a background in science to pursue this career.

How to Become a Biomedical Equipment Technician:
You need to start off by getting your high school certificate. The things you should study in high school are mechanical drawing, electronics, geometry, trigonometry, computer science, etc.

After high school, you should then apply to a school that offers medical equipment repair program. You should get a certificate or associate degree from the school. This should take from 12 to 24 months. You will learn things like::

a. Basic Electricity and Electronics
b. Electromechanical Devices
c. Mathematics
d. Biomedical Instrumentation
e. Digital Circuits
f. Microprocessors
g. Medical Terminology
h. Etc.

Certification is optional in most states. Some people prefer to get it anyway. This is because it increases their chance of employment and making more money.

Should you choose to be certified, you can get it through the US Certification Commission (USCC). This certification will give you the title of Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET).

Medical equipment repairers make very good salary. Our search on Indeed.com showed the national average salary is $43,000 per year. This salary can go as high as $56,000 per year. This depends on your location, education, and level of responsibility.
