What is an Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist?
Neurological disorders are very serious. They involve diseases like brain tumors, epilepsy, Parkinson’s, stroke, to name a few. These diseases or disorders are devastating to families.

The detection of the above disorders is what electroneurodiagnostic technologists (ENDs) do. They are special trained professionals who study, measure, and record the electrical activity of the brain and nervous system. They use specialized equipment to accomplish this. In doing their duty, the END tech will do the following:

1. Prepare the patient for the test
2. Take patient’s health history
3. Give END instructions to the patient
4. Explain the END procedure to the patient
5. Attach the electrodes to the patient’s head
6. Turn on the machine
7. Perform the test
8. Relocate the electrodes based on feedback
9. Lookout for emergency, like seizure during the test
10. Mark sections of the trace paper the doctor should look at
11. Send test result to physician
12. Maintain the diagnostic machines, equipments, and devices
13. Etc.

The technologist must be able to work with the neurologist and other members of the medical team to detect the above disorders. This requires good communication skills. These skills are also handy when it comes to communicating with the patient, friends, and family.

How to Become an Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist:
To become an END tech, you should start by getting a high school diploma or equivalent. You should take classes like physical education, English, computer science, etc.

You will then need to further your education by attending an END technology school. Most elctroneurodiagnostic technology programs will last 1 to 2 years. Whether you are getting a certificate or associate degree will determine the length of time. You should expect to take classes like:

a. Introduction to END
b. Basic Electroneurodiagnostic Skills
c. Neurophysiology
d. Biomedical Devices
e. Pediatric Electroneurodaignostics
f. Anatomy and Physiology
g. END Practices
h. Etc.

On graduating, you need to be certified. You can do this through the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET).

Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist Salary:
END techs make very good salary. The average salary is $41,000 per year. Their salary can go as high as $53,000 per year. This depends on your location, education, and level of responsibility.
